Initial Impressions: Tactics. I do remain impressed that Long War 1.0 managed to make the extreme early game as tactically deep as it did.
Not-So-Initial Impressions: EXALT. EXALT's handling is one of Long War 1.0's biggest, most frustrating missteps. To be fair, Long War's development started before Enemy Within came along... but Mecs don't suffer these kind of issues, so that's not the whole story here.
Long War In A Nutshell. This is the point where I'd substantially soured on the game, and it covers fairly directly how Long War 1.0
does have great, enjoyable moments in its design, but they're outmassed by the ludicrously bad parts.
LoS Mod rec. In spite of having soured on Long War 1.0, I didn't completely give up on it until I got a hold of XCOM 2, because I didn't have alternatives for some of the bits I did appreciate about Long War. As part of trying to bend the game into a less unplayable state, I ended up discovering a mod that backported XCOM 2-style line-of-sight/fire preview functionality; it really does do a lot to make Long War 1.0 less painful. Not
enough, but a lot.
Long War Rebalance

Currently just one post. LWR is a mod of LW1, and it's... actually good? No, seriously, it's actually good!
It also updates constantly, far too much to do one of my deep dives without it being obsolete within a month, so at least for now the one post is all that's happening.
