The Heating research tab in The Last Autumn is very strange for several reasons. The most obvious one is that you don't ever get to use the Generator in The Last Autumn; since the majority of the Heating techs are about the Generator, that's the majority of the tab simply gone right there.
Second, it has the unique distinction of being a tech tab you don't start with: it's only very late in the scenario, when temperatures first start dropping, that the tab is revealed and you gain the ability to make researches within in. No other scenario simply hides a research tab like this.
That second point in turn makes much of the conceits of the tree's presentation sort of ridiculous. Techs within it have variable tier assignments (And start from tier 2), but this is essentially meaningless: you almost certainly have access to tier 5 well before the point this tab becomes available, and while a given tier has a 'default' cost and research time most techs within it will use, the game is perfectly able and willing to assign different costs within a tier, and though it's much rarer to deviate on research times, it's still able to do that as well. As such, while I'm listing the tiers, they're pretty close to a fiction in practice.
Braziers
Costs 30 Wood and 20 Steel.
7/9/13/15 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 2
Requires: Nothing.
Unlocks Braziers.
The...building? If you can call it that?
Brazier
Costs 10 Steel.
Sockets directly onto a road segment, and so does not compete with most buildings. Braziers by default run at all hours of the day, spending 3 Coal per hour to produce a Heat Zone that adds +1 Heat to buildings within it, but Braziers may be set to automatically shut themselves off outside of work hours, including that passing Extended Shift and Short Shift will allow you to set Braziers to their hours.
It's a Steam Hub, but it costs half the Steel and isn't tied to a Generator in any way.
Efficient Burners
Costs 40 Wood and 25 Steel.
8/10/14/16 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 3
Requires: Braziers.
Braziers spend 33% less Coal per hour, reducing them from 3/hour to 2/hour.
It's Steam Hub Efficiency, except...
Advanced Burners
Costs 120 Wood and 80 Steel.
10/12/16/18 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 5
Requires: Efficient Burners.
Braziers spend 33% less Coal per hour, reducing them from 3/hour to 1/hour.
... you get it twice, massively slashing Brazier Coal usage. Ideally you get both of these before running any Braziers, to maximize how far your Coal goes.
Improved Blowers
Costs 50 Wood and 30 Steel.
9/11/15/17 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 4
Requires: Braziers.
Braziers may now be individually set to provide +2 Heat, but running this setting doubles a given Brazier's Coal usage.
It's the Generator's +1 Heat upgrade, but you get to actually toggle individual Steam Hubs Braziers to whichever you prefer. What is this madness? Why are Braziers so much more convenient and good than Steam Hubs?
Radiater Extensions
Costs 50 Wood and 30 Steel.
9/11/15/17 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 4
Requires: Braziers.
Braziers may now be individually set to expand their radius by 50%, but running this setting doubles a given Brazier's Coal usage. (This stacks with Improved Blowers to result in 4 times the expense of both are running)
It's the Steam Hub radius boost. As a 50% increase in radius is still more than doubling the space covered, this remains technically more efficient if fully leveraged. The
Heaters
Costs 30 Wood and 20 Steel.
7/9/13/15 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 2
Requires: Nothing.
Enables the Heater ability at almost all building-based worksites, as well as at Care Houses. Running Heaters drains 1 Coal per hour to raise the Heat level of that building by +1. In the case of worksite buildings, Heaters only have their effects have people are currently working at the builing, while for Care Houses an activated Heater runs at all hours.
Unexpectedly, Heaters can in fact be used to warm up the Generator component construction sites. This is more pertinent to a Builder's Mode Endless Mode run than to The Last Autumn, but if your run is in fact still finishing the Generator as the temperatures get quite low, this option is worth keeping in mind.
Do note that it's overall better to prioritize Braziers and reducing their Coal expenditures. With both Coal reduction upgrades, a Brazier will spend just as much Coal as running a Heater, but of course can cover multiple buildings at once.
more expensive and slower to research than in other scenarios
Improved Heaters
Costs 50 Wood and 30 Steel.
7/9/13/15 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 4
Requires: Heaters
Heaters now provide +2 Heat, but spend 1 more Coal per hour. (For a default total of 2 Coal per hour)
Heater Efficiency Upgrade
Costs 10 Wood and 80 Steel.
10/12/16/18 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 5
Requires: Improved Heaters.
Reduces the Coal cost per hour by 1. (Resulting in Improved Heaters spending 1 per hour)
Note that The Last Autumn doesn't have Advanced Heaters: yuo cap at +2 Heat to workplaces.
twice as expensive as usual
Healthcare Insulation
Costs 30 Wood and 20 Steel.
7/9/13/15 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 2
Requires: Nothing.
Increases the Heat of Medical Posts, Care Houses, Infirmaries, and Dispensaries by +1.
First of two techs:
Healthcare Insulation II
Costs 50 Wood and 30 Steel.
9/11/15/17 hours needed with 1 Workshop at 100%.
Tier: 4
Requires: Healthcare Insulation.
Increases the Heat of Medical Posts, Care Houses, Infirmaries, and Dispensaries by +1.
It's mildly interesting this is technically placed 1 tier earlier than in other scenarios. It's also way cheaper, costing less than half its usual price of 120 Wood and 80 Steel.
